What is Seam Welding? -Types And Applications

Seam welding is a welding process of resistance welding, also known as resistance seam welding, in the manufacturing industry, some parts of the welding will use this process, the use of a wider range. In particular, the welding of metal parts of the barrel is used more, if you are using these devices, or learning about seam welding, then this article will take you to a systematic understanding of the resistance seam welding process.

Principle of Resistance Seam Welding

Resistance seam welding is a process in which two workpieces to be welded are overlapped and placed between two electrode rollers, which are pressurized and rotated, and then the current is passed to form a continuous weld. With the static welding process spot welding and convex welding is different, seam welding is done through the electrode rolling, in the welding electrode rolling to drive the workpiece to move, while welding between the electrode and the workpiece contact point.

Seam welding is a dynamic welding process in which the electrode and the workpiece move relative to each other, and AC pulsed current or amplitude-modulated current is used so that the resistive heat is concentrated at the contact point between the electrode and the workpiece, forming a molten core and joining them together.

Types and Applications of Seam Welding

Types of seam welding Categorized by weld form, seam welding can be divided into continuous seam welding, interrupted seam welding and step seam welding. In the following we will further differentiate them in terms of weld form and application.

Types of Seam Welding

Continuous Seam Welding

Continuous seam welding is to form a continuous seam by continuously discharge welding the electrode and workpiece contact position while the electrode rotates and rolls, and the weldment moves at the same time at the same speed. This type of welding has higher cooling requirements due to the constant discharge heating.

Continuous seam welding weld quality is average, but corresponding to special welding requirements, this process is usually used in the automotive fuel tanks and barrels and other plate components in the gas and water tightness requirements of the scene. The most common is a two-wheeled electrode, or a moving wheel and a fixed mandrel device for supplying current and pressure.

Intermittent Seam Welding

The weldment and electrode move at equal speeds, but the welding current is not supplied continuously but is discharged intermittently, energized once to form a weld joint, thus forming an uninterrupted, equidistant weld joint on the weldment, and its main characteristic is that the welding wheel returns uninterruptedly away from the workpiece during the welding process.

This type of welding is often used to weld sheet metal parts under 1.5 mm that require multiple welding joints to be connected, and seam welding is more efficient and has better continuity compared to spot welding.

Step Seam Welding

In step seam welding, the electrode rolls continuously and the current passes intermittently through the workpiece while the workpiece is not moving. The weld joint formed after this type of welding is most similar to spot welding, and we also call it roll spot welding. The speed of rolling spot welding is relatively slow, but the welding quality is better.

Step seam welding is mostly used for products with high welding quality requirements, and it can also be used for welding workpieces with large thicknesses because it can apply forging pressure like spot welding.

Seam Welding Cooling Methods

The electrode wheel of a seam welder is cooled by internal and external circulation. Because of the large amount of heat generated during the seam welding process, seam welders usually use a water-cooling process to cool the electrodes, the controller assembly and the transformer. The choice of cooling system depends on the material of the plate assembly, the required welding strength and the application of the welded parts.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Seam Welding

Advantages of Seam Welding

The advantages of seam welding are the simplicity of the welding process, the lack of need to add solder, and the ability to form a tight or sealed weld, which is something that ordinary spot and projection welding cannot do. In addition, resistance seam welding is faster and more productive.

Disadvantages of Seam Welding

Although seam welding can form clear weld seams, it can only form straight weld seams, not curved ones, due to the characteristics of roller welding. In addition, its electrode size is relatively large, so if it encounters the corner of the box or cabinet, it cannot be completely welded to, so the welding range of seam welding is limited.

Points to Note for Seam Welding

  1. The weld seam of seam welding is composed of overlapping welding joints of workpieces, and the shunt is more serious when welding, which is not conducive to the welding of aluminum alloy thick plate with high conductivity.
  2. Due to continuous discharge welding, the electrode surface is easy to stick and wear, so we should repair and grind the electrode in time, and it should be noted that the seam welding roller electrode is harder to repair and grind than the spot welding electrode.
  3. Before seam welding, the workpiece must be cleaned up to avoid a lot of spatter during the welding process.
  4. Before seam welding, it is better to use spot welding to avoid misalignment during welding.

What Is Seam Welding Machine

Seam welder is evolved from spot welding, the basic feature of seam welder is that its electrode is in the shape of a roller, welding different types of products in the longitudinal and transverse direction. In general, for the welding of different products, different electrode forms need to be designed.
